What is the difference between OverDrive WMA Audiobooks and OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks?

OverDrive WMA Audiobooks are digitally-protected audiobook titles available for download in the Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. OverDrive WMA Audiobooks are about half the file size of OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks but maintain the same level of audio quality. OverDrive WMA Audiobooks are generally compatible with MP3 players that support DRM-protected WMA files encoded at a bit rate of 32kbps. For a list of supported devices, click here. Many OverDrive WMA Audiobook titles can be transferred to iPods® and iPads® (where permitted by the publisher) using OverDrive Download Station. OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks are encoded at a bit rate of 64kbps and are available for download as MP3 files. OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks are compatible with many devices including most cell phones, PDAs, and MP3 players. If you want to transfer audiobooks to an MP3 player (other than an iPod or iPad) that plays MP3 audio files but does not support DRM-protected WMA files, you must check out OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks.

How can I tell if my MP3 player will play OverDrive audio titles?

Most MP3 players should play OverDrive MP3 Audiobook titles.

OverDrive Download Station is not able to transfer to iPhones.

Many OverDrive WMA Audiobook titles can be transferred to iPods and iPads (where permitted by the publisher) using OverDrive Download Station (in the library) or to iPods, iPads, and iPhones using OverDrive Media Console v3.2.0.5 (or newer, on your Windows PC at home).

Can I transfer titles to the mobile versions of OverDrive Media Console?

Yes. OverDrive Download Station can transfer titles to the following…

  • OverDrive Media Console for Android™
  • OverDrive Media Console for BlackBerry®

To transfer titles to the mobile version of OverDrive Media Console select 'OverDrive Media Console on device' during the transfer process.

OverDrive Download Station cannot transfer titles to OverDrive Media Console for iPhone.

What is a 'bit rate'?

Bit rate is a measure of the quantity of audio data transferred from an MP3 player's memory to its audio decoder. Different MP3 players support different ranges of bit rates. Some MP3 players are able to convert unsupported bit rates to supported bit rates, a process called 'transcoding'.  In order to use OverDrive WMA Audiobook titles on an MP3 player, the MP3 player must support DRM-protected WMA files and either support the bit rate of 32kbps or be able to transcode 32kbps files to a supported bit rate.

How much free storage space do I need to have in order to transfer OverDrive audio titles to my MP3 player?

OverDrive WMA Audiobook titles are delivered in Parts, with each Part generally not exceeding 20 MB in size.  OverDrive MP3 Audiobook titles are delivered in Parts, with each Part generally not exceeding 40 MB in size.  As long as your MP3 player has at least 20 MB of storage space for OverDrive WMA Audiobooks  or 40 MB of storage space for OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks,  you should be able to transfer a single Part or more to it at a time. The more free space you have, the more Parts you will be able to transfer to your MP3 player at one time.

You may return to this Download Station at any time during the specified lending period to download additional Parts, so you can download a few Parts today, listen to them, delete them, and then return to the library to transfer additional Parts before the checkout expires. Once I have checked out an OverDrive audio title, how do I download it?

  1. After checking out a title, click the 'Download' button for the title.
    The OverDrive Download Station Wizard opens.
  2. Connect your supported MP3 player. Verify that the correct title is displayed on the OverDrive Download Station Wizard's 'Welcome' screen, and click the 'Next' button.
    The OverDrive Download Station Wizard searches for a supported MP3 player.
    The MP3 player is detected, and the 'Confirm' screen is displayed.
  3. At the 'Confirm' screen, choose which Part(s) you would like to download and transfer by placing a checkmark next to the desired Part(s), and clicking the 'Next' button.
    OverDrive Download Station downloads and transfers the selected Part(s) to the MP3 player. The 'Status' screen displays the download and transfer progress for each Part.
    When the download and transfer is complete, the 'Success' screen is displayed.
  4. Click the 'Finish' button to exit the OverDrive Download Station Wizard. Disconnect your MP3 player.
  5. Sign out of your account if you are finished checking out and/or transferring titles.

What is an enhanced title?

Enhanced titles are accompanied by supplemental material provided by the publisher. Once you have checked out an enhanced title, you can download the title as well as the supplemental material. What happens to the title I downloaded once I've finished with it?

You do not need to return a borrowed item. Once the lending period has elapsed, the title is automatically 'returned' to the library. Note that files may remain on your MP3 player in accordance with the lending period until you delete them.
